Frequently Asked Questions
How many types of Balloonbikes are there?
Many bicycle manufacturers now have Balloonbikes with the BIG APPLE tires in their model range. Click here for a current guide.
Where can I get a Balloonbike?
In principle from any bicycle dealer. However, Balloonbikes are not yet well-known everywhere. So ask the particular Balloonbike manufacturer which of their dealers have them in stock.
Are Balloonbikes safe to use on road?
They are particularly safe: Because Balloonbikes have over double the road contact area of a standard bike. The super-fast suspension response also ensures the bicycle "dances" less on uneven surfaces. Together, both characteristics provide additional road grip and a stable basis for steering and braking actions. One further advantage: Balloonbikes with 60 mm tires cannot get stuck in tram tracks.
Does a Balloonbike have full suspension?
A suspension fork or a suspension seat post in each case only cushions part of the bicycle. The Balloonbike's tire suspension works on everything - rider, bicycle and luggage.
Can Balloonbike suspension be modified?
Yes, simply by adjusting the tire pressure. The air pressure can be fine-tuned depending upon the weight of the rider and luggage. The comfort range of a normal load with 60 mm tires is between 1.5 and 2.0 bar and with 50 mm tires between 2.0 and 2.5 bar.
How high are maintenance costs for a Balloonbike?
There are no special maintenance costs for pneumatic tire suspension - in contrast to partial or full mechanical suspension, which are not only more expensive to purchase, but also have to be inspected and serviced regularly, in order to ensure proper performance. Just check the air pressure once a month.
Will Balloonbikes work with mechanical suspension systems?
In principle a Balloonbike can be equipped with additional suspension systems. By using good quality, conventional suspension, certain absorption effects can be enhanced and comfort can be further increased.
Why aren't wide tires used on all bicycles?
Racing cyclists prefer to use narrow tires, because they are lighter and can be accelerated faster, but for normal use and speeds of around the 20 km/h wide tires roll more easily and above all are more comfortable.
Are there different tires for Balloonbikes?
Balloonbikes are mainly equipped with SCHWALBE's BIG APPLE tire that is available in two widths (50 and 60 mm) and in all popular sizes, though for serious-minded riders the Balloonbike effect can also be achieved with the high-quality MARATHON XR expedition tire.
What is the difference between Balloonbikes with 50 and 60 mm tires?
Tires 60 mm wide mean maximum Balloonbike comfort. However, the lighter 50 mm tire already has twice the volume of a normal 37 mm tire, making it a good choice for people who want performance and comfort.
Can any bicycle be converted to a Balloonbike?
Almost. But certain technical details have to be considered. The rims usually pose no problems, but frames, forks, mudguards and brakes must have enough clearance for the tires.
